In one 1.5 hour long sessions, poets will be mentored and workshopped towards an excellent short packet of poems which can be submitted to residencies, fellowships, MFAs, or for publications.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

 

Ayesha Raees identifies herself as a hybrid creating hybrid poetry through hybrid forms. Raees currently serves as a Poetry Editor at AAWW's Whiting Award Winning Magazine The Margins and has received fellowships from Asian American Writers' Workshop, Brooklyn Poets, and Kundiman. 

 

Her debut “Coining A Wishing Tower” won the  Broken River Prize, judged by Kaveh Akbar, and is published by Platypus Press.  It was also nominated for the Best First Collection, Forward Book Prize. She is a recent graduate from the MFA program at University of Miami in Poetry, has had residencies at UNESCO creative cities, Millay Colony For the Arts and elsewhere.

 

Raees has been admitted to several MFA programs, and is a graduate of University of Miami’s MFA program. She has worked extensively in academia as well as the contemporary literary landscape in both publishing and literary cultural spaces.

HIGHLIGHTS

 

 

This one-one-one session will be held virtually and will focus on workshopping a your statement of purpose (Academic or otherwise communicated) . The session will be 1-1.5 hour long.

 

Statements will be given an extremely close reading and will extensively be line edited. Time will effectively be spent on research methodologies, academic, literal, figurative language, craft and form techniques, and thematic (contextual) mattering.

 

Both verbal and written feedback will be provided with ample time for an exchange of questions.

 

These sessions are structured to also provide one-on-one mentorship with applicants, their specific needs, and goals in the literary, academic, and publishing landscapes.

 

Students will be mentored individually to empower their strengths that are unique to them with the intention of feedback applicable to their other works.

 

Students will be pointed out their common weaknesses in non-holistic manner with the intention to improve on their work.
